VIDEO CONFERENCING RIGHT
“eye level. blackout room. indirect light.”
The Lesson
Most video calls look amateur because of fixable mistakes. (1) Camera angle: laptop below = you looking down = bad. Raise device to eye level. (2) Framing: too close is uncomfortable; mid-distance with headroom is professional. (3) Lighting: you CANNOT get good lighting with external light sources. Blackout the room completely, then use ring lights pointed at the walls for indirect illumination. (4) Audio: clip-on lavalier mics ($12) beat built-in mics. For phones, AirPods work great as both mic and earphone.
Real-World Example
A founder does investor calls from their bedroom. Laptop on desk = looking down. Window behind = silhouette. Built-in mic = echo. Fixes: Stack books under laptop (eye level). Close blinds, add $30 ring light bounced off wall. $12 lavalier mic. Total investment: $42. Result: You look like you know what you're doing. First impressions on video calls directly affect deal outcomes.
