USING IMAGINATION TO FUEL SUCCESS

you can't do what you can't imagine. so change what you imagine.

The Lesson

You can't do something until you can imagine it's doable. Before the four-minute mile was broken, people thought humans couldn't do it. After one person did, many followed because now they could imagine it. When Dilbert succeeded, coworkers who sat near Scott started publishing books. They watched a normal person succeed and thought 'I could do that.' Famous people often met other famous people when young. Once they realized successful people were normal, they could imagine being successful too. This is a fixable problem: seek contact with successful people in your field. Once you see they're normal, you can imagine yourself in their position.

Real-World Example

A first-time founder feels intimidated by successful founders. They seem superhuman. Then they meet one at a conference and realize: normal person, normal problems, just further along. Suddenly starting a company seems achievable. The founder didn't gain new skills from that meeting. They gained the ability to imagine themselves succeeding. That imagination is what enables the attempt.
