Persuasion

TRIGGERS AND FRAMES

attach annoyances to happy memories. reframe triggers.

The Lesson

Personal example: a wife always eats the cashews from mixed nuts, leaving only almonds. That COULD be annoying. But the reframe: every time the can is opened and cashews are missing, it's a reminder of her presence. That feeling is worth more than the cashews. A stepson's faucet prank (reversing the nozzle to spray you) happened for years. Now, any accidental spray triggers happy memories of him. The insight: find things that could be negative triggers and intentionally attach them to positive associations. You're building a life full of happiness triggers instead of annoyance triggers.

Real-World Example

A founder's cofounder has an annoying habit of asking 'but why?' repeatedly. Annoying frame: they're questioning everything. Reframe: 'That's their way of making sure we've thought it through. It's actually made us better.' Now the trigger ('but why?') connects to appreciation instead of annoyance. Same stimulus, completely different emotional response.
