ILLUSIONS OF LIFE
“talent stacks. enjoyment over pain. you control others. everyone bluffs.”
The Lesson
Collection of common illusions: (1) Being great at one thing. Wrong; talent stacks win. (2) No pain no gain. Wrong; enjoyment drives consistency. (3) Others have power over you. Wrong; you have more power than you think. (4) People make independent decisions. Wrong; you control how others act by how you act. (5) You're the only basket case. Wrong; everyone has deep problems. (6) Glass ceilings exist. Wrong; there are only bad strategies. (7) Others know what they're doing. Wrong; everyone's bluffing. (8) Follow your passion. Wrong; follow what works, passion follows. (9) History/news are objective. Wrong; both are constructed narratives.
Real-World Example
A founder believes investors have all the power. Illusion. A founder believes their industry has a glass ceiling for outsiders. Illusion. Find the right strategy. A founder thinks competitors know what they're doing. Illusion. They're bluffing too. Identifying your illusions opens options you couldn't see.
